Self harm at HMP Frankland - home of Sean Mercer and Yorkshire Ripper - rockets



There were nearly 28 assaults per week on prisoners and guards over the last year in North East jails, a new report has revealed.
The Ministry of Justice figures also showed that over the same period there were 1,799 incidents of self harm among prisoners, averaging around five a day.
The worrying numbers come just a week after Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons reported that the state was failing in its duty to people in prison.
The region’s jails - Durham, Frankland , Low Newton and HMP Northumberland - saw assaults among prisoners rise 11% to 808, or 15 a week. Attacks on staff... read more
