See Tynemouth Castle and Priory's historic artillery gun being restored to its former glory



The role of a religious site which also played its part in defending the North East coast over the centuries is being restored.
Work has started on cleaning, repainting and repairing the Second World War coastal artillery gun at Tynemouth Castle and Priory.
The gun was manufactured in 1943 by Vickers Armouries, based at Elswick in Newcastle, and was the backbone of British coastal artillery from 1890 until 1956.
It was acquired by English Heritage in 1993 to represent the type of gun which would have been used at the headland site for coastal defence.
