See the latest piece in Roker Pier's makeover as tunnel lifted in to place



The roof to Roker Pier’s new tunnel entrance has been lifted into place.
It is part of ongoing works to the Grade-II listed pier which was closed after being damaged in gale force winds.
The new entrance will allow the tunnel to open to tours for the first time.
Featuring glass panels, it will also be faced in granite like that used in the pier.
Councillor Mel Speding, Sunderland City Council’s cabinet secretary, said: “It was used to access the lighthouse by lighthouse keepers who used to the live in the houses near us.
