Second World War veteran celebrates turning 95



A Second World War veteran from Scunthorpe celebrated his 95th birthday this week.
Derek Wells, Bolsover Road, celebrated his day alongside family and friends yesterday (October 3) at Silica Lodge Garden centre.
Derek, who grew up in Broughton, served in the 6th Lincoln Infantry where he toured North Africa and Italy.
During his time in North Africa, Derek was wounded after being shot in the leg.His daughter, Collette Larsen, said her dad often speaks of the time.
"He talks a lot about an American doctor who saved his leg from catching gangrene," said Mrs Larsen.
