Seamen demand end to ship ‘slavery’



SHIPPING union RMT hit out at the “shocking exploitation” of foreign seafarers yesterday as it backed calls for government action to stop “modern slavery” in the offshore supply chain.
RMT parliamentary group chair Ian Mearns has tabled an early day motion highlighting the government’s failure to prevent job losses among British seafarers on offshore supply vessels (OSVs) or the replacement of British crew on OSVs with cheap foreign labour, some of whom are paid as little as £2 per hour.
