Seabird census urged as fears grow for puffins



They are known as the “clowns of the sea”, their comical expressions, bright colours and rolling walk when they land on terra firma enthralling tourists and birdwatchers around Scotland’s coast and islands. But while the puffin is often a star attraction on wildlife-spotting boat trips, a leading seabird expert says he fears numbers are falling and is calling on the Scottish Government to fund an up-to-date census to determine the exact numbers of the elusive creatures and safeguard their future.
