Sailing: Alex Thomson makes history as he extends lead in the Vendee Globe trophy
 

The Hugo Boss skipper made up for an early error on day two that left him in ninth position in the solo, unassisted, non-stop round-the-world race, and took the lead for the first time with a bold move as they passed through the Cape Verde islands over the weekend.
Last night he became the first non-Frenchman to lead the fleet past the equator, beating the mark set by Jean Le Cam in 2004 of 10 days and 111 hours  a major milestone in his bid to become the first non-French winner of the race.
