Rocket scientist gets honorary degree and it all started in Leamington



A leading rocket scientist who once launched rockets as a hobby in Leamington has just received an honorary degree from Warwick University.
Alan Bond received an honorary doctorate of science from Warwick at its recent degree ceremonies.
As a child he was inspired to take up rocket science by a Dan Dare cartoon published in The Eagle comic about fighting aliens in space.
He joined amateur rocket groups travelling to Leamington from his home in Ripley, Derbyshire, to team up with other enthusiasts.
By the age of 15 he had launched about 300 rockets.
