According to recent reports, English rugby’s governing body, the Rugby Football Union, could shortly create uproar by imposing spending constraints on clubs below the top two tiers for the first time.
A salary cap has governed the Premiership for some years to prevent a situation whereby the rich clubs become an untouchable elite, and ensure the competition remains competitive.
But while the RFU stopped providing funding other than a travel expense contribution to clubs below National One, where Coventry play, some years ago, they have never previously constrained clubs’ spending.
