Traffic bosses say a £5 million plan to reopen Putney Road will help Leicester City fans get home quicker after matches.
The city council wants to reopen the blocked western entrance of the 300 metre route between Aylestone Road and Welford Road.
Officials say creating a two-way route would help relieve congestion, but have indicated the move could increase traffic in Victoria Park Road by 10 or 15 per cent.
Residents fear that allowing through traffic will snarl up other roads nearby.
