Revealed: 400-million-year-old fish fossil sheds light on how humans evolved two sets of teeth

Many people will probably remember the moment they lost their first milk tooth.
But what they may not have noticed as a child was the lack of roots attached to the pearly white covered crown.
While scientists know the tooth’s ‘anchor’ is absorbed as a permanent tooth grows from beneath it, how this ingenious system of tooth replacement evolved has been a mystery.
Now researchers have shown the phenomenon of ‘stacking teeth’ dates back to before the time of the dinosaurs.
