The original first Megane was conservative but worthy, while the second generation went buxom-bottomed and famously “shook its ass” on national TV to the strands of the band Groove Armada.
The third version was more sensible but ambitions of rivalling the VW Golf remained well out of reach. This is an incredibly tough market sector, at the core of the car industry but under pressure from crossovers with family hatchbacks often defining a manufacturer’s brand.
