Nadal took time off at the end of 2016 to deal with a wrist injury but returned in January 2017, reaching the final of the Australian Open where he lost to Federer.
The Spaniard has since collected two more Grand Slam titles and in August, returned to the top of the world rankings for the first time in three years.
But Nadal now says that despite the resurgence of Federer after his own injury woes 12 months ago, he did not fear the Swiss challenging him for the No 1 spot because that was not his primary concern.
