Nadal sealed the year-end number one spot with victory at the Paris Masters in November.
But the Spaniard was forced to withdraw from that tournament with a knee injury and, after just one match at the ATP World Tour Finals, he quit after being unable to cope with the pain.
Roger Federer’s shock defeat to David Goffin in the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals dented his hopes of closing the gap to his great rival.
It means Nadal, who will begin the new season at the Brisbane International in January, has a 1,040 point lead over Federer.
