Plans for 'new town' west of Newcastle gather pace as council signs off on 3,000 homes at Callerton
 

The row over plans to build 3,000 homes to the west of Newcastle reached fever pitch as council bosses signed off on the development.
More than 100 residents were marshalled into the Civic Centre on Wednesday evening by the Callerton development’s most vocal opponent, Westerhope ward councillor Marc Donnelly.
Donning a high vis jacket and holding a clipboard, Coun Donnelly led residents to the cabinet chamber - which had to be changed to accommodate the extra numbers.
Police officers were also on the scene to keep the peace.
