Pep Guardiola's shadow looms large... the Manchester City boss is changing our game, but Gareth Southgate must act alone and be his own man

Ostensibly, Pep Guardiola has little influence on this England team, or their meeting with Spain on Tuesday night. He does not coach either country, is responsible for no more than two England players at club level, has been in English football less than six months and departed La Liga more than four years ago.
Even so, his presence loomed large in just about every conversation on Monday. When England's manager-elect Gareth Southgate discussed the aspects of Spain's game that he wanted his players to emulate, they were the strengths honed by Guardiola at Barcelona.
