A conman who bought a stately home near Bishop Auckland , a US mansion and a racehorse stud farm without a penny to his name has been jailed for six years.
Aristocrats, banks and civic leaders were all duped into believing William Davenport, 60, was a multi-millionaire Beverly Hills-based “toff” with millions in the bank.
The “real-life Walter Mitty” even persuaded Durham County Council to sell him the Grade II-listed home of a former Prime Minister Windlestone Hall by posing as a member of the landed gentry.
