Parents fined £130k for Hull and East Riding children missing school last year



Parents in East Yorkshire were fined more than £130,000 for their children missing school last year.
Hull City Council issued 805 education penalty notices during the academic year 2015-2016, ordering parents to pay £48,300 in total.
Meanwhile, East Riding Council issued 1,454 notices, charging parents £87,240 in fines according to figures released under the Freedom of Information Act. In 2014-2015, East Riding parents were among the most fined in the country.
Schools can inform councils of unauthorised absences, and fine parents £60. This fine can increase to £120 after 21 days.
