Overtime alert sparked by £1.4m Staffordshire Police bill

A £1.429m net overspend on staffing, which has been attributed to higher than anticipated levels of overtime, agency staff numbers, pension and redundancy costs, has been revealed by the force.
Frank Chapman, chairman of the Staffordshire Police and Crime panel, said spending extra on overtime was inevitable due to the nature of the job, but urged police chiefs to keep an eye on their overspend in order to ensure they can recruit new officers.
The warning comes at a time when the force is looking to recruit dozens of new officers.
