Out of his tree? Campaigner John Bull wades into battle to save oldest tree in Birmingham



Veteran campaigner Ray Egan – the man who protests under the name John Bull – has taken a trunk call to save one of the region’s best-known trees.
Having formed his own splinter group, Ray intends to climb the 30-foot London plane that has stood proudly in the heart of Birmingham for 140 years.
And that’s some feat for the 77-year-old former police officer, especially while wearing his trademark John Bull attire, which includes top hat and tails.
On Wednesday, Ray again took to his soapbox. He stood next to the mighty tree with placards declaring “God Save Our Tree”.
