Northern Rail faces investigation over fears lack of competition is driving up passenger fares
 

The new Northern Rail franchise faces an investigation into concerns a lack of competition is pushing up ticket prices.
Sunderland-based Arriva PLC won the franchise to run the Northern Rail services last year, in what the Government called a boost for the Northern Powerhouse.
But the decision has been challenged by the Competition and Markets Authority, the official body set up to prevent monopolies or anti-competitive practices.
