Newcastle man who triggered police raid over explosives at his home was making home-made bangers

Improvised explosive devices found in a Tyneside man’s flat turned out to be no more than home-made fireworks while his collection of chemicals were just for innocent experiments, a court heard.
Police were alerted to concerns about the actions of Mark Gilhespy after he ordered various chemicals off ebay.
Worries heightened when they found 12 explosive devices at his home in a block of flats in West Denton, Newcastle.
But it turned out they were just home-made bangers for Bonfire Night and he had the other substances simply because he was interested in chemistry.
