New cargo ships employ 300 but none are British



A NEW fleet of British cargo ships will not employ a single British seafarer as bosses opt for the cheapest overseas labour available to boost profits, maritime union RMT warned yesterday.
Atlantic Container Lines is launching a British-flagged fleet of five new container vessels, registered in Liverpool, which will be crewed by 300 workers.
However, RMT campaigners will protest in the port at 1pm today over the company’s refusal to employ British seafarers.
RMT welcomed the company’s investment in the vessels and a further £400 million in a new terminal in Liverpool.
