My Malta replacement Gareth Southgate can become England manager for years to come

I didn't score many goals for England, but I could hardly miss when David Beckham put one on a plate for me against Malta in June 2000.
It was a fantastic free-kick from our No 7. It seemed to do a U-turn mid-air and head back towards me — it was just begging to be headed in! It was only my second international goal and I should have scored earlier in that game from another Beckham delivery, but Kevin Phillips had strayed offside so it was disallowed.
