Mother who stayed awake during brain surgery says she could 'feel the holes being drilled into her head'



A mother-of-three had two holes drilled into her forehead during brain surgery – while she was awake.
Ester Gardner was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease two years ago after suffering tremors during the night.
Within just 18 months her condition worsened and made her body shake during the day and affected her ability to walk.
Now 49, she was was forced to stay conscious during an operation to ease her of her tremors.
Surgeons had to use the strength of movement in her hands to judge to right spots to implant electrodes - which would then prevent her symptoms.
