MOT shock - Why 500,000 old cars won’t need one but your new car will
 

New rules that will see hundreds of thousands of older cars on the roads without an MOT are just a few months away. 
From May 2018, there will be around 500,000 cars on the roads in the UK that are exempt from the MOT test. 
The shock rules were announced by the Department for Transport in September 2017. 
Currently vehicles that are registered before 1960 are exempt from an MOT test and from May those registered before 1970 will be. 
This will add almost 300,000 (293k) cars to the existing 197,000 which no longer need to pass the roadworthiness test.
