Metro funding row could see North East leaders REJECT funding for new fleet

Proposals for a £435m overhaul of the Metro could be in jeopardy if council leaders and government cannot agree a funding deal.
Department for Transport officials are currently weighing up how to fund a new fleet to replace the 40-year-old trains currently in use.
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has publicly accepted the need for an overhaul of the system but the two sides could be miles apart on the details of the funding deal.
