Man avoids jail after attacking elderly Gateshead couple in their own garden
 

A man has dodged a jail sentence after attacking an elderly couple in their own garden.
Richard George Charlton, 36, has been handed a four-month suspended prison sentence after admitting two counts of common assault for the attack on May 30 last year.
Charlton was walking through the Leam Lane Estate in Gateshead , banging on doors of different houses when he confronted a 71-year-old man his 68-year-old wife.
