The story of Donna Cross, a severely ill woman who has lived alone by candle light for a year without electricity or gas after her benefits were axed, brought ECHO readers to tears.

The tragedy is that Donna Cross is not alone - in almost every community across Merseyside, and the whole of the UK, people find themselves in desperate need.
