The newly crowned world champion crashed out of qualifying on Saturday and was forced to start last, from the pit lane.
But Hamilton begun the race of the soft tyre, allowing him to stop later and slice through the field on faster, fresher rubber in the latter stages of the race.
He passed Max Verstappen to take fourth and spent the last 10 laps chasing down Kimi Raikkonen, but was unable to get past the Ferrari.
