ADRIAN WEIR remembers Les Ford, an indefatigable organiser and practical internationalist who liked reading Bertolt Brecht and the French paper of the left, l’Humanite
AFTER a year-long battle with cancer Les Ford has died at home in Eastbourne.
Les was born in rural Sussex and after starting his working life as signal box boy he later went to work on the docks at Newhaven, then a British Rail-owned port.
It was on the docks that he rose through the ranks of the local lay leadership of what is now RMT — then the NUR. At this time he also joined the Communist Party.
