“Beautiful soul” Len Saunders risked his life to help others - but was killed in a senseless attack in his home town.
The 65-year-old former nurse lived a life defined by selflessness and modesty, according to the friends and family who loved him.
His killer, 17-year-old Luke Woods, was detained for four years and four months after punching Mr Saunders in an “unprovoked” street attack, just because he did not have a cigarette.
Woods, of Union Street in St Helens, admitted manslaughter and told police he was extremely drunk at the time of the incident.
