Leicester killer stabbing man to death in bail hostel was 'most gruesome investigation', detective says



A senior police officer said the brutal slaying of Leslie Salmon was “the most gruesome investigation I have led.”
Detective Inspector Gemma Booth, who led the team that put killer Martin McDermott behind bars, said the murderer calmly walked into the kitchen at Burdett Lodge bail hostel, picked up a knife and set about Mr Salmon in a “frenzied and sustained assault”.
DI Booth said the 60-year-old, originally from Leicester, “almost decapitated” his victim in front of a shocked onlooker at the Bass Street hostel in Derby before brutally stamping on his head almost 20 times.
