Westwood and Belgium-born Pieters were never in their match against in-form Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar who combined to hand Europe the biggest defeat in the morning session.
It was also only Westwood’s fifth defeat in 18 Foursomes matches and sadly on the occasion of celebrating his 10th appearance for Europe.
Westwood arrived in Minnesota with a 20 wins, 15 halves and a six loss record, and needing just 2 ½ points to go pass Nick Faldo’s all-time European Team victory record.
