Kevin Keegan, then in charge at St James' Park, sold midfielder James Milner to Premier League rivals Aston Villa for £15million and was looking for a replacement.
Newcastle approached Bayern Munich for the Germany World Cup winner, but were stunned when they came back with a valuation of £50m.
The 32-year-old veteran spent 17 successful years at Bayern before leaving for Manchester United in the summer of 2015, but has since been demoted to the reserves by boss Jose Mourinho.
