The Mayor of Nottingham was in the wrong place at the wrong time. In Wheeler Gate, to be precise, just as the locals at Goose Fair started getting uppity over rising food prices.
Violence broke out and in the melee, round truckles of cheese were sent rolling down Wheeler Gate towards Ye Olde Marks and Sparks, or whatever stood on that site in the mid-18th century. The heavy cheeses gathered such pace that when they struck His Worship, the town's first citizen went flying.
