‘I will not stand idly by' Despite backlash Merkel says she's dedicated to saving migrants
 

Speaking ahead of a three-day trip to Africa, where discussions will focus on co-operation between the two continents on migrant policy, Mrs Merkel said the welfare of millions of people on the continent was in Germany's interest and had become a "strategically highly important issue".
She said: "Most of the time we were simply satisfied that no refugees were coming."
Mrs Merkel has come under intense criticism for Germany's open-door immigration policy which has seen more than 1.1 million refugees pour into the country.
