THE next Rio Ferdinand – that was the expectation on the shoulders of Gavin Gunning as a kid.
After being chased by Manchester United and Arsenal at 14, he eventually left his home in the Kilmacud area of Dublin to sign for Blackburn Rovers.
And just two years later, he was training with a Premier League squad that included the likes of Tugay, Benni McCarthy and Brad Friedel.
