'I don't understand why they turned it down' - Communities Secretary on North East devolution
 

Talks on a new North East devolution deal have begun, Local Government Secretary Sajid Javid has confirmed.
But only Newcastle, Northumberland and North Tyneside are involved in the discussions - because the original North East deal between the Government and seven North East councils is “dead”.
Mr Javid said it was “too early to say” whether the three authorities north of the Tyne could have their own elected mayor.
