THE UK is now home to more than 14,500 people aged 100 or older - a rise of 65 per cent in the past decade.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed the number of people lucky enough to get sent a telegram from the Queen in recognition of reaching 100 years of age.
The latest figures show a continued increase in centenarians in the UK with the ONS estimating that 14,570 people had reached this age last year.
This continues the rapid increase in the number of people living to very old ages over the past decade with just 8,850 centenarians recorded in 2005.
