How effective has the plastic bag charge been?



The five pence charge on plastic bags has made a massive change in the North of England, new research suggests.
In the first study to be completed since the charge was introduced a year ago today, a survey shows that 92 per cent of people in the North now take their own bags with them when food shopping.
In comparison, just 65 per cent of people taking part in the survey took their own shopping bags with them before the charge was put in place.
The region was previously the least likely to use their own plastic bags, and this increase is the biggest seen in England.
