Darren Clarke's flops were left shattered following a United States whitewash in the morning foursomes in Minnesota.
It left the holders facing a 4-0 deficit heading into the afternoon four-ball matches and under huge pressure to turn things round.
But Clarke's men responded, with Open champion Henrik Stenson and rookie Rafa Cabrera-Bello leading the charge.
