George Osborne struggles to explain how Northern Powerhouse helped the North East
 

Former Chancellor George Osborne appeared to concede that the North East was not a key part of his Northern Powerhouse project, when he was challenged to explain what he had done for the region.
In a revealing answer, he said the region needed “special intervention” and admitted his policy had been focused on cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds which are relatively close to each other - rather than the relatively remote North East.
