Many people misread Gareth Southgate. When he played in my England side, there was a toughness to him. If you asked him to mark a player, he would do so, intelligently and shrewdly. He liked a tackle. He was aggressive. It was as though he would say: 'Over my dead body are you getting past me!'
He was great team player, as well as a superb professional, good mixing with the other lads, had a good sense of humour and was not a loner. And there was that steeliness about the way he played.
