FTSE CLOSE: Footsie finishes above 7,000 in an intense day's trading that has also seen the pound decline to 1980s lows



17.00 (close): The FTSE 100 leapt 1.3 per cent to close up 90.8 points at 7,074.3 this session. 
It fell back in the last fifteen minutes to below its record close of 7,103.9, having at one point traded as high as 7,121.9 - just short of its record intraday high of 7,122.7.
At the same time its smaller cousin, the FTSE 250, climbed 0.9 per cent to 18,342.1 points. 
15:40: The Footsie has held onto gains in late afternoon trading and looks set to finish the session on a high.
With less than an hour to go the FTSE 100 index was up 126.9 points at 7110.9.
