Having the influence of an owner over a football club has been a reality since the sport left its amateur beginnings and took on a more professional guise.
It has not just been in modern times that owners have hit the back pages for the wrong reasons either. Brian Clough used to regularly rail against directors and those he perceived as not being footballing men.
