But on the basis of the screen version, it is hard to understand its success. This is like a slightly grander version of the kind of trashy potboiler that might normally make a decent two-part ITV drama.
Only the central performance from Emily Blunt adds a touch of class. Blunt’s Rachel is a lost, lonely soul who fills her daily commute to Manhattan by speculating on the lives of the people she glimpses from the train window.
