'Faulty equipment' in manhole blamed for Leek underground fire

An underground fire which left 280 homes and businesses without power has been blamed on 'faulty equipment' in a manhole.
Supplier Western Power today apologised for the blaze which started under a pavement in Sneyd Street, Leek, and resulted in flames shooting seven feet in the air.
The blaze initially cut power to 107 properties in the Broad Street, Russell Street and Sneyd Street area at 2.50pm on Sunday.
A further 173 properties then lost power at 4pm and power was completely restored by 9pm.
A number of roads were closed following the emergency.
