Ex-St Helens mayor charged with historic offences
 

A former St Helens mayor has been charged with historic sex offences.
John Beirne - who sat as a local councillor in the borough for 22 years - has been accused of 14 offences alleged to have taken place between 1976 and 1979.
The 55-year-old is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on November 16.
Mr Beirne, of Blackdown Grove in St Helens, is an ex-councillor who has previously represented the Lib Dems and UKIP.
He sat on the council between 1990 and 2012 and took on the prestigious role of mayor in 2008.
