Sam Allardyce’s 1,000th game as a manager was overshadowed by the broken leg suffered by his midfielder, who attempted to nip in and pinch the ball as Salomon Rondon prepared to shoot.
Unfortunately the Venezuelan’s follow-through connected with McCarthy’s lower right leg. 
Medics rushed onto the field to treat the Ireland international, with Rondon in tears having seen the aftereffects close up.
